BEACON: Social Action

MAY 2012

Social Action News

CROP Walk

Save the date of Sunday, May 3 for the CROP Walk, a yearly walk and fundraiser to fight hunger in our community, our country and around the world. Last year we raised over $4,000 (3rd highest in our Region) from members of our congregation who donated and/or walked the six mile route. This year Mike DeLonay and Colleen Keleher will again lead the effort at Unity Temple. You can make a donation by walking, sponsoring a walker, or just making a donation. You can do this at Coffee Hour at the Social Mission table or online at http://www.oakparkhungercropwalk.org/

For more info on the CROP Walk, call Mike at (708)795-1588 or log on to http://www.churchworldservice.org/CROP/index.html  (International Site) or http://www.cwscrop.org/greatrivers/index.html  (Regional Site).

Selecting Groups for Our Sunday Collections

This year at our Congregation's Annual Meeting on Sunday, May 20th, we will again vote to select the groups receiving our Sunday collections in the coming Church year.  If you want to propose a group to be added to our ballot, contact Rich Pokorny.  I will send you a proposal form, which needs to be completed and returned to me by May 1st.  I'll be glad to answer any questions that you have.  Contact Rick by email rvpokorny@comcast.net or call 708-218-1202

Unity Temple Gives

The generosity of our congregation is making a difference in people’s lives.  Every Sunday our collection plate offerings are donated to a worthy charitable organization in support of our mission and values.  During the months of March 2012, your weekly collection donations contributed the following amounts to these organizations:

  • Unitarian Universalist Service Committee: $2,239.76
  • Hephzibah Children’s Association: $2,117.48

Thank you for your generosity!
