BEACON: Board of Trustees
MAY 2012
Our Democratic Process
Ian Morrison, Board President
president@unitytemple.org
We affirm and promote use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large.
Once a year, we gather to celebrate that particular principle at our annual congregational meeting. We gather to elect members to our board of trustees, officially approve the congregational budget for next year, to act on social mission initiatives, and transact other business that requires a congregational vote. It is an opportunity for the whole congregation to gather and act together (or to decide not to act, as the case may be).
The annual meeting cannot happen, however, unless we have a quorum -- consisting of 20% of the members eligible to vote. While this number is often in flux up to the date of the meeting because one of the prerequisites to voting is to have made a financial commitment to the congregation (or obtained a waiver), it appears as if this year, a quorum will be something on the order of 105 members. So, please make time in your schedule to attend the annual meeting, after second service on May 20.
While the agenda is still being finalized, so far, we have at least six pieces of business to address:
• Election of new board members -- Karin Sullivan, Steve Kelly, and Ben DeBerry have been nominated by the Nominating Committee for election to three year terms on the Board of Trustees.
• Approval of the 2012/2013 budget.
• Voting on two statements of position regarding matters of conscience (regarding becoming an immigrant welcoming congregation and the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan); and
• A congregational vote to affirm our covenant with the Community Renewal Society.
• In addition, during the meeting, we will receive reports from congregational committees and may provide a few brief updates as to ongoing projects.
Let’s make it not only a good meeting, but also a quick one by having a quorum right at the start and avoiding the need for frantic phone calls to family and friends.
Speaking of democracy (and its corollary, individual responsibility), we have embarked on a feasibility study for a congregational capital campaign. This important process will help determine if we are ready to commence a campaign within the next twelve months and will help shape the campaign’s objectives. Many of you have received invitations for an interview by our fundraising counsel, Pratapas Associates. Because it is not feasible to interview everyone, we will also conduct a number of focus groups and will offer an electronic survey in an effort to give all members the opportunity to participate and provide their input. Please take the time to participate in this important process in whatever way you are asked.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I thank each member for participating in these important activities of our self-governing community.
